Shabbat at JORI: Campers and staff enjoy a traditional Friday night Shabbat dinner complete with dancing and singing. Lively Shabbat services follow. Israeli dancing and an oneg Shabbat treat round out the evening. Saturdays are marked by late breakfasts in pajamas, swimming and a special event, often organized by our Israeli staff. Shabbat ends with a Havdalah campfire and ice cream delivered to the cabins!
Reaching Up is an inclusive program for both Day and Overnight campers with special needs that makes JORI accessible to all children. Campers who may require some additional support in cognitive skills or social-emotional coaching will have that extra staff attention. Reaching Up (RU), which launched in 2006, provides a highly structured overnight camping experience for children with special needs. Due to the increasing success of our program, RU campers and staff have been seamlessly integrated into our “regular” programing for several years. Through combining the campers with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) with their neuro-typical cohorts in the daily activity and living arrangements, the JORI experience creates enormous opportunity for growth and independence for all and has been successful due to the provision of professional staff and the intentional training provided to all counselors. The goal is that through the camp experience, the RU camper will expand language and communications, improve social skills, develop friendships, and expand self-awareness.
